Mizuuki Tsujimura の 'Lonely Castle in the Mirror' を読んでいます。

' 'You're so annoying. If you're going to diss them, then give them back. It took time to get all this stuff together, you know.'

"diss" は先日取り上げた "fess" と同様に、元になる "dis + xxx" 言葉の略語の様ですが、 "dis + xxx" は沢山あるので直ぐには検討がつきません。文脈から見当が付かないといけないのでしょうが、せっかちなので辞書を見ます。

・Collins Dictionary: If someone disses you, they criticize you unfairly or speak to you in a way that does not show respect.: [informal] He believes that his records speak for themselves and ignores those who diss him.
・Cambridge English Dictionary: to disrespect: Don't diss me, man!
・Merriam-Webster: to treat with disrespect or contempt: dissed her former co-star in the interview
・Vocabulary.com: treat, mention, or speak to rudely: “the student who had betrayed his classmate was dissed by everyone”

"disrespect" から来た略語でした。"diss someone" の場合上記の辞書の説明にある意味になるのですね。

Kokoro was a little relieved. She wasn't the only one who hadn't cottoned on.

"cotton on" は前にも調べたと思いますが、忘れているので又辞書を見ます。
・Oxford English Dictionary: to begin to understand or realize something without being told: I suddenly cottoned on to what he was doing.
・Collins Dictionary: If you cotton on to something, you understand it or realize it, especially without people telling you about it.: It wasn't until he started laughing that they cottoned on.
・Cambridge English Dictionary: to begin to understand a situation or fact: I'd only just cottoned on to the fact that they were having a relationship.

文脈から意味を思い出さないといけませんね。

"fess up" を調べます。

・Cambridge English Dictionary: to admit that you have done something that someone else will not like: Fess up - it was you who ate that last piece of cake, wasn't it?
・Merriam-Webster: to admit that one has done something wrong : confess: At first he denied everything, but eventually he fessed up.

"fess" は "confess" から来た俗語ですね。

上に引用した個所の "winning over" は、私が大学4年生の時に入社が内定した商社の英語顧問が、入社までに読むようにと（推奨だか指示だかは忘れた）おっしゃった本、"How To Win Friends and Influence People" (私が初めて読む英語の原書です）を思い出しました。"How To Win Friends and Influence People" は１９３６年に出版され、大ベストセラーとなった、人間関係の本で、邦題は『人を動かす』、今でも本屋で必ず見かけます。
さて、"winning over" の意味を辞書で確認します。

・Collins Dictionary: If you win someone over or win them round, you persuade them to support you or agree with you.: He has won over a significant number of the left-wing deputies.
・Cambridge English Dictionary: to succeed in getting someone's support or agreement, esp. when the person was previously opposed to you: He had some good ideas, but failed to win over Congress.

私が大学生の当時は、理工系の学部では英語は全く重要視されておらす、英語の授業内容はとても貧弱で、高校の時よりはるかに劣っていました。そんな訳で "How To Win Friends and Influence People" を読破するのは無謀かもと思いましたが、この本は理論ではなく、実例で説得させる内容で、時代も違い、舞台も米国なのに、興味深く読める本だったのでなんとか入社まで読了することができました。私が定年近くになって英語の原書を読むようになったのはその時の経験があったからでしょう。

"chill out at home" の意味を辞書で調べます。"chill out" で次の説明がありました。

・Collins Dictionary: To chill out means to relax after you have done something tiring or stressful.: After raves, we used to chill out in each other's bedrooms.
・Cambridge English Dictionary: to relax instead of worrying or feeling anxious: If anything major happens we’re going to find out, so let’s chill out and just do what we need to do.
